    Protecting Yourself From Fraudsters

    • Fraudsters use a practice called phishing to trick people into giving up their personal information. Phishing schemes start with fraudsters pretending to be legitimate businesses which are contacting potential victims through phone, email and text message and luring them into sharing private information such as social security numbers, account PINs and passwords or credit card and banking information. For example, they may pretend to be from UScellular telling you that your account is past due, at risk of being suspended or canceled unless you provide payment information immediately. Other fraudsters will promise you compensation, discounts or rebates if you provide your personal information directly or through a website.
With today’s technology fraudsters often spoof their information by creating fake email addresses or disguising their phone numbers when attempting to trick people into sharing private information. They even create fake websites that look similar to the company they’re pretending to be.
Once fraudsters obtain your information, they may:
      • Take over your account and order new phones or accessories and have them shipped to a different address. Fraudsters do this without your knowledge and leave you to deal with the charges.
      • Transfer (port-out) your mobile number to a different carrier to use on their own device. They may attempt to gain access to your other online accounts by resetting passwords or otherwise authenticating themselves as you through your mobile number.
    • There are several ways you can protect your UScellular account information. Your account has a PIN code that must be verified before the account information can be accessed. We also have several security questions that you can answer if you forget your PIN.
When selecting a PIN for your account, pick a unique number that’s not easy to guess. Some numbers to avoid include:
      • Last 4 digits of your SSN
      • Birthdays
      • Anniversary dates
      • Common numerical values (1234, 2020, 1111)
Make sure that the answers you provide to security questions are not common knowledge, or that you don’t share them accidentally on social media or other areas that can be accessed by fraudsters. Examples include: What was the first concert you went to? What is your favorite drink?
    • Immediately report any concerns to UScellular Customer Service at 888-944-9400 for issues such as:
      • A lost or stolen phone.
      • Your cell phone suddenly no longer connects to the network.
      • Frequent wrong number calls or hang-ups.
      • Requests such as asking for your device’s ESN (Electronic Serial Number) or IMEI from someone claiming to be from UScellular.
    • Only share your personal information when necessary.
Before responding to any unsolicited request for personal information ask:
      • Who is asking for the information and are you sure they are who they claim to be?
      • Why do they need this information?
      • If at all unsure, do not respond until you contact the requester’s company or agency directly through a published number and verify they’re legitimate.
      • Forward any questionable message via text to 7726 from your UScellular phone. Reporting these messages to 7726 helps us identify phishing messages fraudsters send our customers. We use this information to strengthen our phishing prevention efforts.
      • You can contact UScellular at 888-944-9400 or by dialing 611 from your cellphone.
Note: UScellular will never ask you to use email or text to provide us with personal information.
      • Lock your wireless phone (with a PIN code) when not in use and employ a full password (not a 4-digit code). If available, use the fingerprint of face ID features on your device in addition to a passcode.
      • Check your credit report regularly for errors. You can obtain a free copy of your credit report from each nationwide credit reporting company for free. For more information see the FTC website.
      • Do not carry extra credit cards, your social security card, birth certificate or passport with you unless it is necessary.
      • Destroy or shred preapproved credit applications, bank statements, phone bills and credit card receipts before throwing them away.
      • Limit the ability of companies to share your information with third parties by reviewing their privacy policies. This is sometimes buried in the fine print.
      • Keep all documents containing personal information in a safe place.
      • Use a password manager to avoid using insecure and repeated passwords online.
      • Look for unusual activity on your bills.

    Understanding Robocalls

    • A robocall is a phone call that delivers a pre-recorded message and not a live person.
    • No, some robocalls are positive (e.g. appointment confirmations). A few types of robocalls are allowed under the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) rules without your permission (e.g. charities asking for donations, political calls about candidates running for office).
    • A positive robocall presents no harm to subscribers, and some may even be wanted or needed. Examples include public service announcements, appointment confirmations and prescription refills.

A nuisance robocall isn’t illegal or indicative of malicious intent, but might be a call that customers don’t want to answer all the time. Examples include promotional offers, solicitation and accounts receivable.

A high-risk robocall of includes loss of money, invasion of privacy and identity theft. These callers are trying to gain a caller’s trust to prey on them.
      • Spammers place automated phone calls in a manner that is in willful non-compliance with state and federal laws governing the use of automated dialing.
      • Spoofers knowingly transmit misleading or inaccurate caller ID information. These calls may be placed manually or through an auto-dialer. Spoofers often use various methods to mask their telephone number in order to show a completely different number, often a number that may be local or familiar to you.
      • Scammers disregard state and federal laws to make calls with the intent of committing identity theft or other types of fraudulent behavior.
    • One-ring robocalls trick you into unknowingly making international toll calls, which can add hundreds of dollars of charges to your account. One-ring scammers use automated dialers to randomly call hundreds of numbers, but the calls are disconnected after one ring. Victims see a missed call in their call log and, thinking it may be important, attempt to call the number back. The number appears as a typical U.S. 10-digit number, but in reality, these are international long-distance calls, often originating from the Caribbean.
      • Do not answer any call from a number you don’t recognize, and don’t return the call, even if it looks like a legitimate number. If the missed call was truly important, the caller would have left you a message.
      • Block the number from making any more calls to you.
      • Report the number as spam via the www.reportarobocall.com portal as well as the FCC Consumer Complaint Center.
      • If you typically don’t make international calls, you can contact Customer Service at 888-944-9400 and ask an associate to turn off international dialing. This will prevent you from unknowingly calling an international number and incurring fees.
      • Download our exclusive Call Guardian® app. The free subscription will display a potential spam notice for all known offenders. The premium version displays enhanced details for all potentially risky callers and allows you to block calls by a selected risk level. You can download the app now in Android and iOS versions.
    • While there may not be a single answer that entirely ends these activities, we’re fully committed to fighting the increase of robocalls by taking the following measures:
      • The UScellular call-blocking solution aims to block as many of the calls made with malicious intent as possible. These calls have the potential to invade your privacy through identity theft, money scams and other forms of fraud. We automatically block these calls in the network, and your phone won’t ring.
      • UScellular provides a free Call Guardian® app that displays “Potential Spam” on caller ID based on known offenders as a possible unsolicited call or displays “Spam Caller” on caller ID based on your personal spam list. You can download the app now in Android and iOS versions.
      • UScellular provides a premium Call Guardian® app for $3.99/mo. that displays enhanced details for all potentially risky calls as Potential Spam, Potential Fraud or Robocall. Android users can block calls by a selected risk level of High, Medium or Low.
      • UScellular uses STIR/SHAKEN technology to update our spam detection algorithm. STIR/SHAKEN is a caller ID authentication framework to help protect you against malicious caller ID information which is often used during robocall scam campaigns to trick consumers into answering their phones.
      • UScellular supports the legislation, including the TRACED Act, which gives the FCC and enforcement agencies greater authority to go after scammers.
      • Additionally, UScellular supports the Truth in Caller ID Act, which allows the government to charge robocallers with illegal “spoofing” once they prove the caller intended to defraud, cause harm or illegally obtain something of value.
    • The UScellular solution relies on data from multiple sources utilizing our analytics partner, TNS. TNS analyses robocall data from more than one billion daily call events across hundreds of telecom providers. Thanks to this volume of data, TNS can extract insights on emerging robocaller tactics and trends. Learn about the latest robocalls scams here.
    • If you would like to opt out of this free call-blocking service, please contact Customer Service by calling 888-944-9400 or visiting a local UScellular store.
    • If you want to report a spammer, spoofer or scammer, please contact TNS via this website and use the Call Guardian® App to report the caller as spam.
    • If you are a consumer, and feel that your number is being blocked in error, please contact our Customer Care by calling 888-944-9400  or visiting a local UScellular store.

If you are a business or enterprise and think your telephone number is being blocked or mislabeled, please contact TNS via this website.
      • Read the consumer tips from the Federal Communication Commission (FCC.gov) to stop unwanted robocalls.
      • Register your phone numbers on the Do Not Call List. Although this FTC registry won’t spare you from calls where scammers are intent on breaking the law, it should prevent you from receiving “live” telemarketing calls, which are regulated by the federal government, but are not illegal.
      • Don’t answer calls from numbers you don’t recognize. Legitimate callers will leave a voice mail.
      • Don’t call back numbers you don’t recognize. If you get a call from an unfamiliar number that rings once and hangs up, don’t call back. These could be what is known as a one-ring scam that will incur charges to the caller.
      • Always confirm a charity’s identity (by calling or looking at its actual website) before donating.
      • If you think your personal information has been compromised, contact your local law enforcement.
      • Be diligent and don’t give out personal information over the phone.
